Build a Auto DashCam

Download the Raspbian buster lite Download Here

Default The default user is pi and the password is raspberry

Base Setup

Set keyboard to US from GB

vi /etc/default/keyboard
change gb to us

Update OS

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y

Update time

dpkg-reconfigure tzdate
America/location

Install additional Packages

apt-get install vim

Update default editor to VIM

Verify Current Editor

ls -lt /etc/alternatives/editor

Update editor

sudo update-alternatives --config editor

Fix VIM


Change Password

sudo raspi-config

Change Hostname

sudo raspi-config

Enable SSH access

sudo raspi-config
interface options
P2 SSH

Find IP Address

hostname -I

Install Lighttpd

Other Wed Server Options

Verify Apache is not installed

sudo apt-get remove apache2

Install Lighttpd

sudo apt-get install lighttpd -y

Create default landing page (if needed)

vi /var/www/html/index.html
Add some text "DashCam Build"
Save and Close

Verify it is running by browsing to local IP address

hostname -I

To restart the Wen server

/etc/init.d/lighttpd restart

Install Motion

Install from Repo

sudo apt-get install motion
  • Note this will install LOTS of stuff

FFMpeg Functionality(Required for creating movies, using network cameras, etc.)

sudo apt-get install libavformat-dev libavcodec-dev libavutil-dev libswscale-dev libavdevice-dev

Webp Image Support (optional)

sudo apt-get install libwebp-dev

Backup the original conf file

 cp  /etc/motion/motion.conf /etc/motion/motion.conf-ORG
